Build a practical mental model of listening practice: understand the situation, follow the message, and select the answer supported by what was actually said.

A caller asks a recreation centre about a room booking and later requests a smaller room.

Demonstration

Useful frame: ‘Caller adjusts a booking to reduce cost.’ Less useful notes: ‘Tuesday, twelve chairs, window, sixty dollars’ with no relationships.

Explanation

Before collecting names, times, or prices, identify who is speaking, why the exchange is happening, and what decision or problem organizes it. This frame gives later details a place to belong. A number is easier to remember when it is attached to a deadline, rejected option, or final agreement. During practice, write one short situation line such as ‘tenant asks manager to repair a heater’ and update it only if the speakers' goal changes.

Treat answers as evidence claims

Actions

Restate each option as a short factual claim.
Locate evidence before explaining why the answer feels right.
Name the exact mismatch in every distractor during review.

Example

Lesson

A familiar topic word such as ‘wait’ is not enough; the condition and action must also match.

Context

A neighbour offers a ride but says she may leave briefly if an appointment lasts more than an hour.

Demonstration

Supported claim: she will decide based on the wait. Unsupported claim: she has promised to wait in the car for the entire appointment.

Explanation

Each answer choice makes a claim about the recording. Your task is not to choose the most familiar or reasonable statement; it is to find the claim with direct or clearly implied support. After a practice set, return to the transcript and underline the smallest phrase that justifies the correct answer. Then explain why each alternative changes a person, condition, time, cause, or degree. This review builds transferable discrimination instead of recognition of one script.
