Explanation

Dense notes can feel productive while consuming the attention needed to understand the next sentence. The problem is not writing itself; it is recording material without deciding its role. Limit each line to a speaker, action, and status. When an option repeats a word from the audio, check whether the person, direction, condition, and outcome also match. Distractors often preserve vocabulary while changing one of those relationships.

Recover instead of replaying mentally

Use one question mark to park a missed detail.
Reconnect at the next clear noun, verb, or discourse marker.
Afterward, decide whether the gap reflects sound recognition or attention control.

Lesson

A controlled gap protects later evidence and may prove irrelevant to the question.

Context

A listener misses a street name and spends ten seconds trying to recall it while the speakers confirm a pickup time.

Demonstration

Better response: write ‘location ?’, resume listening, and capture ‘pickup 6:15 confirmed.’

Explanation

When a phrase is missed, silently replaying it causes a second loss because the recording continues. Mark a small gap, return attention to the current sentence, and listen for later repair or summary language. Speakers often restate a key decision in different words. During review, classify whether the missed phrase was actually necessary. If it was, practise the sound pattern; if it was not, practise letting the gap go without anxiety.
